Despite having ridden horses all my life I was not immediately enticed into my present career. I took a management job in my early twenties and it was not until I was 29 that I decided to try working with horses as a profession.
During my time working with horses I have completed various qualifications through the BHS examination system, including obtaining my status as a Fellow of the British Horse Society. This is a great honour although the process is a very rigorous one. Candidates must be given various recommendations and have a suitably accomplished CV. Following this, there is an examination lasting 3 days including practical riding and written examinations, 8-9 hours a day, so commitment is essential!
At present, I am working towards various training events in March, followed by international events in April and May. I have 6-7 horses being evented on the national circuit. Working with horses has many advantages, self-employment being one of them, and can be an incredibly rewarding profession. However, one must constantly strive to improve and determination is vital.
