Floristry
Debbie Hughes, Senior Florist and Acting Manager

Floristry has always appealed to me and it is something that allows me to pursue a career and not just a job.

I became involved in the floristry industry when I was 17 through my school careers centre. I knew that I wanted something interesting to do, so started looking at vocational training. I tried a two-week work experience in catering, but that wasn’t for me. When the careers advisor suggested floristry, I just knew that was what I wanted to do!

I started my training in the shop and worked alongside the staff, learning from them before enrolling at college to do my NVQ level 2. I really enjoyed this, so I went straight on to complete my level 3 the next year. During this I did my D32 and D33 assessors awards.

My current role is as acting manager of the shop in the absence of the owners. I enjoy serving customers in the shop and on the phone. I also help with the training and assessing of the junior florists.

I have completed all of the current NVQ floristry qualifications, but I would like to enhance my skills further and develop my own style of floristry. I enjoy attending shows, demonstrations and workshops, and aim to train further to be a more confident manager.

The floristry profession is never dull, each day is different, and there is always something new to learn. I always find that my hard work is appreciated and this is an incentive for me.
