Kevin Jackson, Greenkeeper, Troon Municipal Golf Course

Kevin Jackson from Prestwick left school with a clear aim – to become a greenkeeper. This single-minded dedication to his goal has served him well, as he achieved a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) at Level 2 followed by a Modern Apprenticeship in Amenity Horticulture, and now works as a Greenkeeper at Troon Municipal Golf Course.

Kevin is an exceptional young man who has achieved his qualifications against the odds. Between seasonal Greenkeeping posts and whilst completing his training with South Ayrshire Council, Kevin worked a nightshift at a supermarket stacking shelves - choosing the nightshift so that he could attend his Greenkeeping Course during the day.

Kevin is highly valued by all of his previous employers who have all been impressed by his dedication, timekeeping, cheerful attitude and determination to succeed.

Rewarding his outstanding performance in his career to date, Kevin was a runner up at Lantra`s Scottish Land-based Modern Apprentice of the Year 2003 awards. These special awards have been designed to reward the achievements of Modern Apprentices in Scotland who demonstrate commitment, have gained knowledge in a specialised land-based subject and support others as part of their personal development.

The judges of the competition were particularly impressed by Kevin`s hard work, perseverance and determination to succeed against the odds.
