Coventry school pupil takes his garden design to prestigious RHS Garden Wisley
The national schools competition winner of ajobin.com, Luke Teeling (15) from Coventry, won a day's work experience at the Royal Horticultural Society's flagship garden at Wisley in Surrey as part of his first prize.
Luke took a design he had drawn for his mum's garden to get expert opinion. His day's programme included a tour of the 240-acre garden during which Luke took notes on the type of plants that would suit the soil type and aspect of his garden. He was also shown plant propagation and practical horticulture with the floral department.
Luke was one of over 7,000 visitors to the website during the three-month competition campaign earlier this year. He also won an iPod nano and £500 for his school.
Cairngorms National Park hosts prize winner
Prize winner, Lucy Wormald from Fortrose Academy, Inverness, won a day of work experience with a Water Vole Conservation Officer at Cairngorms National Park, as her runner-up prize for the national schools competition on ajobin.com
Lucy’s work experience included inspecting mink rafts and finding out more about the Scottish water vole at sites at Strathdon and Glenlivet. The mink rafts contain clay pads which are used to take prints of animals visiting the floating rafts.
Lucy said: “I liked the chance to see a job I never knew existed. It gave me the chance to see what a conservation officer does and has shown me more about the opportunities for working in conservation. It was great to be able to talk to a conservation officer about her qualifications and how she got into this career. I also liked being outside and doing something practical for conservation.”
